Ranking Methodology

We have calculated our league tables using data published by the Department for Education. If you click on a school's name below you will be taken to where the school is on our schools map allowing you to see its latest inspection report, inspection rating and a wealth of other information about the school such as detailed exam results, website, parents' opinions, local authority website and more. For further information regarding exam results, see our results explained guide.
I have seen schools in different positions on other league tables, why is that?

Depending upon what measures you use for comparison in league tables the order of the schools will change. Where available we have chosen pupil's Average Point Score (APS) as a measure, as it is very granular. As this measure in no longer available for primary school pupils, we have calculated our leagues tables this year by sorting primary schools based on the “percentage of pupils meeting the expected standard in reading, writing and maths” and then by the “percentage of pupils achieving at a higher standard in reading, writing and maths“.

Schools marked with a are schools that are ranked within the top 10% of all schools (England only), based upon their pupils' exam results.

Information regarding KS2 results

Most independent schools don't measure Key Stage 2 performance. Thus there is no direct comparison between state and independent primary schools available.

There have been many changes to Key Stage 2 testing this year. Final year primary pupils sat a raft of tough new tests in the summer. Only 53% of pupils passed, compared to the 80% who passed easier tests in 2015.

We used to base our league tables on pupil’s Average Point Scores, however these are no longer reported and so instead we have calculated our leagues tables this year by sorting primary schools based on the “percentage of pupils meeting the expected standard in reading, writing and maths” and then by the “percentage of pupils achieving at a higher standard in reading, writing and maths“.

Information regarding GCSE results
There has been a lot of controversy this year regarding GCSE results. The Department for Education changed performance tables in 2014 to exclude re-sits, IGCSEs and a range of vocational qualifications. As a result some schools, particularly independent schools which often use IGCSEs (considered harder than GCSEs), appear to be performing far worse than they actually are. In fact a lot of independent schools have now dropped to the very bottom of the GCSE league tables. Here is a BBC article on the resulting controversy.
Information regarding gender filter
Where results are filtered by gender, the rank displayed remains the rank amongst all schools, not just schools of that gender.
