What is it like to attend this early years setting?

This provision meets requirements Children are very happy at this welcoming club. Friendly staff greet children by name as they collect them from their classrooms.

Children walk sensibly with staff through the school to the club. They chat about the school day, pleased to see each other again. Children feel a sense of belonging and security.

Staff set high behavioural standards and children follow the rules and expectations. On arrival at the club, they leave their belongings tidily outside. Children listen as the manager explains what activities are available for them and they quickly go to play.

Children play extremely well together and explore ...the range of activities on offer. Children know the club's routine well.The club remained open during the COVID-19 pandemic for key workers and vulnerable children.

Staff put in place additional safety measures where children played together in their year group 'bubbles'. Staff kept in touch with children who could not attend, and sent home packs with craft and science activities. Children were made to feel they were still part of the club and they settled back with ease when the club reopened to all families.

What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?

Children are well supervised while attending the club. Staff position themselves effectively to ensure children remain safe. Staff establish strong relationships with children.

If children struggle to manage their behaviour appropriately, staff quickly step in to remind them how this impacts on others. Children listen respectfully and adapt their behaviour accordingly. Children are caring and quick to offer comfort and support to younger children if they become upset.

Staff work closely with parents and children to find out about their interests. Meetings take place each term where the manager talks to children about their ideas to make the club even better. The manager uses this information well to develop the provision even further, for example offering more opportunities for outdoor play and nature-based activities.

Staff provide a wide range of activities for children and add new resources when needed. Children investigate textures at the sensory table and concentrate as they build tall towers using blocks. They draw and paint using the range of art and craft materials.

Children use their imaginations while playing with cars and dinosaurs. All children show positive attitudes towards their play.Children have access to physical play outdoors.

Staff set up activities, such as an obstacle course. Children enjoy the challenge and show good physical skills as they jump, throw and catch. Staff sensitively support younger children to join in and develop their coordination.

Children of different ages play well together.Children gain a good knowledge of how to be healthy. They choose their daily snacks from a selection of nutritious foods available and have access to drinking water.

Staff encourage children to try new tastes and textures, such as radish and celery. Staff meet children's dietary needs well. Children follow good hygiene practices, such as washing their hands before eating.

Staff help children to be independent. Older children have the responsibility of serving the food at the snack station. All children clear away and wash their plates when they have finished eating.

The manager is part of a strong leadership team. Staff attend regular supervision meetings and undertake peer reviews to help them reflect on their own practice. New staff complete a thorough induction programme and benefit from an effective programme of training to further improve their knowledge.

All staff feel very well supported and enjoy their roles.Partnership working is strong. The leadership team works well with parents, the school and other professionals to plan how to meet children's needs, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities.

Children benefit from an inclusive provision where they can access all aspects of the club.Parents are very complimentary about the club. They say staff are accommodating and supportive.

The manager ensures there is good communication with parents to keep them informed about their child. Parents feel they can talk to staff if they have any concerns.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

The premises are safe and secure. Leaders implement robust recruitment procedures to ensure all staff are suitable to work with children. The manager and staff have a comprehensive understanding of safeguarding and child protection matters.

The manager regularly assesses staff's safeguarding knowledge, such as through quizzes. Staff understand the referral procedure to follow if they have concerns about a child in their care. They have a good knowledge about wider safeguarding issues and know what action to take to protect a child from risk of harm.
