Summary of key findings for parents and pupils

This is a good school Since the last inspection, leaders and governors have brought about a cohesive approach to driving school improvement. As a result, standards have improved across the school.

The committed and knowledgeable governing body know the school's strengths and areas for improvement. They ask searching questions and provide significant challenge to leaders. Pupils are happy and safe at Martley.

They enjoy coming to school and talk about being part of 'one big family', supported by a committed team of staff. Pupils behave well and rarely miss a day of school. Teaching is much improved.

In most cases, teachers make sure that pupils are tak...ing part in lessons that challenge them to improve on their previous best. Pupils make strong progress in mathematics and are mastering skills at a greater depth. In 2016, pupils left key stage 2 having made progress that was above the national average.

Improvements in the curriculum mean that pupils are able to take part in creative and motivating learning experiences. This extends into extra-curricular activities, where pupils are able to take part in a variety of creative and sporting opportunities. Staff know and care for pupils very well.

They foster and develop good relationships with parents and want pupils to do their best. Safeguarding is effective. The drive to improve standards in writing across the school is having a successful impact.

Pupils of all ages talk about how they enjoy writing. However, progress in writing is not as good in key stage 1. Writing standards are less consistent in topic books across the school.

Leaders have made sure that their assessment information about pupils is accurate. This allows them to make sure that interventions are targeted to help pupils who may have fallen behind, or who need extra help, to catch up. However, this is not the case in the pre-school provision.

Information is not broad or accurate enough and it is not clear how much progress children are making. Children in pre-school enjoy a wide range of activities, both indoors and in the outdoor environment. However, these activities are not carefully planned or targeted to make sure that children are challenged sufficiently.

While pupils are achieving a greater depth in their learning in mathematics, this is not yet the case in reading and writing.
