What is it like to attend this early years setting?

The provision is inadequate

Breaches of safeguarding and welfare requirements have an impact on children's safety and well-being. The provider does not have a secure enough understanding of how to manage allegations made against members of staff.

That said, children are happy and confident at this small and welcoming nursery. They quickly settle to play when they arrive. Pre-school children choose what they want to do and are eager to join in with their friends and the staff.

Babies show clear attachments to the staff, who successfully comfort and reassure them so they can continue to play and explore. The caring and gentle approach staff h...ave throughout the nursery contributes to the positive relationships children build with them and the other children.Staff successfully engage children in the activities and support their curiosity and excitement to explore.

As children play with water, they learn about floating and sinking. Staff talk to them about and demonstrate what floating and sinking mean. Children are interested in counting how many toy figures can go on a boat before it sinks.

Staff support children's learning. As toddlers cuddle teddies and place them in a toy buggy, staff make suggestions to extend this interest and provide further resources to promote children's imaginative play.

What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?

The provider has insufficient knowledge of how to manage allegations against staff members.

This lack of understanding resulted in incorrect and inappropriate processes being followed that potentially put children at risk. The provider also failed to notify Ofsted about a significant event within the required timescales, which is a requirement of registration. That said, staff complete training and have regular safeguarding discussions to develop their confidence.

Risk assessment is effective. Staff supervise children to keep them safe. Children who sleep are frequently checked by staff, and the premises are safe and secure.

Staff demonstrate effective skills as they interact with and teach children. They actively promote children's communication and language as they introduce new words, such as hibernation, juggling and bakery. Staff help children understand what these words mean by referring to pictures in books, talking to them, and visiting the nursery tortoise.

These interactions contribute to children learning new vocabulary and developing a good understanding of difference concepts.Overall, pre-school children enjoy the large- and small-group activities. Staff help them to learn about shapes as they talk about images on picture cards.

Children compare the differences between two- and three-dimensional shapes. They confidently speak about a cuboid, cylinder, circle and triangle. During stories, most children listen intently and relish the opportunity to talk about what they can see in the pictures.

However, some children begin to get distracted and lose interest when group time is lengthy. The staff know the children well. Their positive interactions and time spent playing with children help them develop a secure awareness of what children know already.

Staff ensure the curriculum is effectively sequenced to extend children's learning through planned activities they are curious about. They carefully consider how best to use additional funding to support children's progress. This results in children accessing meaningful, relevant books and resources to benefit their learning.

Children's behaviour is good. They understand staff expectations for behaviour. Staff are good role models.

They are calm, speak clearly to children, and support them to share and work together. Staff introduce effective strategies to help children learn to take turns. For example, when children want to go on the swings, they add a mark or write their name on a clipboard and use a sand timer to ensure everyone understands whose turn it is next.

Staff promote children's independence. Toddlers learn to use cutlery and successfully feed themselves at lunchtime. Pre-school children are encouraged to use large spoons and tongs to serve their dinner and scrape their plates clean when they have finished.

Children demonstrate a sense of well-being at the nursery. They make friendships and show care and concern for one another. Babies settle to sleep when they are tired and wake happy.

Staff build strong partnerships with parents. Parents like the daily communication from the nursery staff. They comment that all the staff are approachable.

Parents feel reassured and well informed through the detailed feedback staff provide when they collect their children. Parents comment on the progress they can see their children make at nursery, particularly in relation to their social skills, confidence and recognition of shapes and numbers.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective.

There is not an open and positive culture around safeguarding that puts children's interests first.

What does the setting need to do to improve?

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and Childcare Register the provider must: Due date ensure the policy and procedures for managing allegations against members of staff are robust, clear and appropriately implemented.04/11/2024 To further improve the quality of the early years provision, the provider should: nenhance how staff organise and manage large-group activities to be meaningful for each child who takes part and to help them remain engaged.
