What is it like to attend this early years setting?
The provision is outstanding
Staff provide exceptional support to all children, including babies, in the extensive outdoor area. They ensure that they all benefit from the experiences on offer.
Children show a keen interest in the natural environment and enthusiastically turn over logs and tyres to look for insects. Staff are excellent play partners and indulge children's interests and their imaginative play. For example, staff follow children through structures and play along in their imaginary games.
They give children the resources they need to build on their ideas. Children have meaningful first-hand experiences that help them to proble...m-solve. For example, they work extremely well together as they consider how to make the balls and water move faster down the guttering.
Other children learn how to problem-solve as they build dens on a large scale using branches. Children show very high levels of concentration during all activities, and staff make the very most of their interactions to increase children's language and learning. For example, children in the mud kitchen mix water with the soil, and staff skilfully introduce new vocabulary and mathematical language.
Staff show a deep understanding of how children learn and develop. For example, they prioritise activities that strengthen children's hand, wrist and arm muscles to help support their writing skills. Children build firm relationships with each other and staff.
They have excellent opportunities to increase their self-help skills and to actively learn.
What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?
The educational programme is designed around children gaining knowledge and skills through the outdoor environment. Children discover, experiment and learn about and connect to the natural world.
They engage in adventures, such as tree climbing and play in muddy puddles, which are used exceptionally well as part of the learning experiences.Staff place an excellent focus on promoting children's resilience, physical development, self-awareness and confidence as they use the experiences on offer outdoors. For example, even the youngest children walk along the agility see-saw, and older children skilfully scoot around on bicycles though the muddy ditches.
Staff work exceptionally hard to ensure that all children are prepared for their next stage of learning. This is the local pre-school, which is also run by the provider. Staff place a high priority on fostering children's personal and social development and improving their health and emotional well-being.
Children are extremely confident in their environment and easily explore and develop their own ideas as they play. The manager and the deputy lead a happy and dynamic team of staff who are clearly dedicated in ensuring all children are valued as individuals. Staff tailor children's learning according to their interests and learning styles.
For example, staff place close attention to boys' learning and ensure that the literacy activities provided motivate boys and girls equally. This small staff team works extremely closely together and knows all children and their families very well. Parents report that the relaxed and open approach results in them feeling exceptionally welcome and they can speak to staff at any time.
They value the ongoing support and guidance they receive on how they can support their children at home.Robust monitoring systems and incisive professional development opportunities for all staff ensure high-quality teaching across the nursery. The manager and deputy take a lead on quality improvement at the nursery and in the local area.
For example, they hold a regular partnership meeting for early years settings to help build on the quality of practice in the area. The highly effective deployment of staff results in all children benefiting from excellent support. Staff expertly use their observations of learning and systematic assessments of children's progress to swiftly identify any children who may benefit from additional support.
This results in staff working extremely closely with parents and other professionals to help close any gaps in children's learning rapidly. The weekly forest school session offers excellent opportunities for children to take controlled risks, and they learn to identify hazards in the environment. For example, despite their young age, children talk about how to carry sticks safely and learn about the rules to keep safe around the firepit.
Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The manager ensures that children's safety is given high priority at all times, in particular as they use the vast outdoor area. Staff provide controlled risks and manage high-risk activities such as climbing trees and using challenging physical equipment extremely well.
They have an excellent understanding of child protection issues and the procedure to follow if they have a concern about a child. Staff benefit from ongoing safeguarding training to ensure that they all have a thorough understanding of wider safeguarding issues to help promote the welfare of children. There are extremely effective systems in place to ensure all staff are suitable to work with children and their ongoing suitably assessed.
