What is it like to attend this early years setting?
This provision meets requirements Children thoroughly enjoy their time in this friendly and well-organised club. Staff welcome children by name as they arrive. Children of all ages immediately begin to play together and enjoy the fresh air as they play games outside.
For example, children negotiate roles and rules as they have fun playing football. They form strong relationships with each another and with the supportive and enthusiastic staff. Children make independent choices when at the club and children demonstrate that they know the routines.
They quickly engage in activities, such as art and drawing. They are encouraged to use their imaginations and b...e creative. For example, children spend time drawing and colouring as they take part in a 'still life' activity.
During this, children observe and draw a bowl of fruit and demonstrate that they are keen to build on their literacy skills. Children talk about healthy food and learn the names of fruits, such as tangerines and kiwis. Children eagerly show visitors their drawings and are proud of their achievements.
Children are encouraged to use the toilets and wash their hands without the support of staff. This promotes children's confidence and supports them to become independent.
What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?
Staff encourage children to participate in conversations.
When children arrive, they talk about their day at school. Staff support children as they complete activities that the teachers have asked them to do for homework, such as reading. Children are completely engaged and motivated throughout the club session.
Staff ensure that their favourite activities are available. For example, children choose to play card games with their peers.Staff support children to have a healthy lifestyle.
They use discussions to help children to learn about healthy options. Children are provided with healthy food for snacks, such as vegetables and fruit. Staff are fully aware of children's allergies and dietary needs and ensure that these are met.
The manager is experienced and focuses on children's well-being and resilience. She finds out detailed information about children when they start to help ensure that they are consistently settled and happy.Staff consistently model kindness and respect for others.
They support children to find resolutions to problems and remind children of their manners. Children follow the rules that they agree to the 'SHAC ethos' when they first start at the club. Staff and children regularly talk about these guidelines to help children to understand acceptable behaviour.
As a result, children behave impeccably.Staff have very strong partnerships with staff in the school served by the club. They meet regularly to discuss children's welfare and to to share key information to ensure continuity of care.
The headteacher comments that she is very happy with the relationship the school has with the staff at the club. Staff pass on messages from schools to parents and vice versa.The manager ensures that staff complete the required training, such as paediatric first-aid and safeguarding training.
She recognises the importance of staff's professional development and has a clear understanding of monitoring staff and supporting them through supervision sessions.Children's input is valued and welcomed by staff. Staff actively seek children's views and opinions as part of their approach to self-evaluation, so that children continually benefit from a quality provision.
Staff support children to develop a good level of understanding and respect for other peoples' similarities and differences outside of their own communities. They plan different theme nights and activities to help to support children's understanding. For example, children learn about various cultural festivals and about foods that originate in different countries.
Parents are extremely complimentary about the club. They say that there is a happy and warm environment and would not hesitate to recommend to others. Children say that they enjoy the activities in the club and are always happy to attend.
All speak highly of the caring staff and appreciate the safe childcare provided.
Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.Staff understand their responsibility to keep children safe.
They have a clear understanding of the signs that may indicate children are at risk of abuse. Staff understand the correct action to take if they have any concerns. All required policies and procedures are in place with regard to ensuring the safe and effective running of the club.
The environment is safe and secure. Staff use risk assessments which are effective in minimising risks to children. Young children demonstrate that they feel safe through the secure attachments they have formed with staff.
