What is it like to attend this early years setting?

This provision meets requirements Children arrive happily at the after-school club. Staff discuss the school day with them. They eagerly tell staff how the school play they saw was awesome.

Children access activities they have shown an interest in. They excitedly retell information from earlier activities. For example, children talk about a child doing the splits when they were all dancing.

Children quickly settle into activities of their own choosing. They use paper, and various mark-making resources to make their own wrapping paper. Children receive support from skilled staff who provide a wealth of opportunities to extend their language.

They t...alk about what colours they make when they mix paint together and what happens as glitter goes into the paint.Children understand the importance of being safe. They correctly hold scissors when moving from one table to another.

Children eat a range of healthy snacks. They confidently discuss with visitors the types of food provided and how much they enjoy it. Children's behaviour is good.

Activities are provided that enable them to share resources and play games together. Children enjoy socialising with their peers.

What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?

The after-school club is managed well.

The manager understands and values the importance of communication with parents and carers. Staff have strong links with the local school. Staff from the after-school club share information on a daily basis with the school.

Staff reflect on what activities the children have enjoyed during the past few days. This enables them to continue to build on previous learning and experiences. Staff use a whiteboard to record activities previously enjoyed, or resources the children have requested.

Parents praise the after-school club. They share that their children are happy and well cared for. Parents state that the staff are professional and friendly.

Parents feel that their children are safe and secure while attending the club. Parents and children have the opportunity to share their views about the after-school club. They complete questionnaires that allow the staff to make changes if they are necessary.

Staff skilfully support children who speak English as an additional language. They use visual prompts that are easily available on lanyards. Staff value all languages and share words in English and other languages.

For example, they ask parents and children to share how to say 'goodbye' in Ukrainian. Staff take pride in the progress all children make with their language.Staff have a good relationship with all children.

Children happily talk to them about their day and the activities they would like to do. Children enjoy the company of staff. For example, children laugh when staff show them paint on their hands.

Staff introduce the children to visitors. This enables children to feel confident to approach guests. Staff recognise children who may need support while visitors are present.

Staff encourage children to decide on activities they would like to take part in. For example, when children become restless, staff ask what they would like to do. Staff engage the children by playing noughts and crosses or musical statues.

The manager completes risk assessments and shares these with all staff. For example, the manager checks the outside area and shares that the playground is too icy for the children to use. This allows staff to plan for other physical play while indoors.

Staff support all children well. Staff encourage children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) to take part in all activities. Staff work alongside the school to ensure plans are provided to support children with SEND.

This promotes consistency for the children. Staff are confident to speak to parents if they have concerns about a child's development. This enables all children to be well supported.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The manager and staff have a good understanding of safeguarding. They recognise the signs of abuse and understand their duty to protect the children in their care.

All staff are clear about procedures to record and make referrals. They understand their role in regard to the 'Prevent' duty. Staff are clear about what they would do if they had a concern about a colleague.
