What is it like to attend this early years setting?
This provision does not meet requirements Children's safety is compromised. Staff do not have a secure understanding of the safeguarding policy and reporting procedures.
This means that staff do not understand the correct action they need to take should they have a concern about a child or another member of staff's conduct. This said, staff effectively organise the collection of children from school. Children understand the rules for these arrangements which include, waiting in the designated area, wearing high visibility jackets, and walking sensibly back into the school with the club staff.
Staff provide children with a range of enjoyable activities and ...equipment during outdoor play. Children enjoy playing ball and racket games. They work with friends using large construction equipment to build items.
Children choose to draw with chalk on the floor. They have close bonds with the staff. For example, they call staff over to talk about their drawings.
However, staff do not organise the routines or set out activities in the indoor room to maximise the opportunities for children to relax and play. Children spend much of their time waiting for snack and do not engage in purposeful play.An effective key-person system is in place and staff know the children well.
They liaise with the school staff to find out what children are doing in school. Staff communicate with the school, such as reporting any accidents children had during the breakfast club.
What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?
The provider's self-evaluation has not been effective enough to identify weaknesses.
Although staff receive safeguarding training, this has been ineffective in ensuring that all staff, including the designated safeguarding lead, understand how to report a concern about a child or an allegation about a member of staff. This means that children's safety cannot be guaranteed.The provider's monitoring of staff practice and the arrangements at the club have been ineffective in identifying where these do not meet children's interests.
Children have limited space to play indoors, and staff provide a restricted selection of resources for children to use. This means that some children choose to sit and wait fifteen minutes for snack with nothing else to do that interests them. Some children leave without having experienced any play.
Staff spend most of their time completing daily tasks, such as preparing snack, cleaning up after snack and escorting children to the toilets or to meet their parents when they come to collect them. This leaves them with very little time to engage with children and enhance their play experiences.The manager explains how they rotate the resources that children access.
This includes, drawing equipment, shop role play, board games and card games. However, when children arrive there are no activities set up for children. While a member of staff prepares snack, the other member of staff fetches board games out of the cupboard and sets them up on two of the four tables.
The remaining tables cannot be used because these are used for snack. This means that children have a restricted area to play in.Staff promote children's health well and implement effective hygiene routines.
This includes ensuring children wash their hands and have some physical activity. Children have access to drinks and a snack. Staff follow effective arrangements for managing accidents that children have.
They know about children's specific health needs and manage these appropriately.Staff support children's independence and children develop a sense of responsibility. This includes, helping to open doors for their friends, collecting in the high visibility vests and to scrape their plates after snack.
Children organise their own belongings on arrival and departure.The manager recognises that some children particularly enjoy reading and have a wide selection of books that children can access. This complements children's learning in school.
Staff support children with their homework when required.Staff have suitable expectations for children's behaviour. They gently remind children about the rules, including setting out the expectations for children to play safely outdoors.
Staff encourage children to use good manners at snack time. Children behave well. They especially enjoy having opportunities to play outdoors with their friends.
Parent partnerships are effective. Parents appreciate the flexible arrangements to accommodate their childcare needs. They say how the communication from staff is helpful.
Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective.There is not an open and positive culture around safeguarding that puts children's interests first.
What does the setting need to do to improve?
To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and Childcare Register the provider must: Due date train all staff, including the designated safeguarding lead, to understand the safeguarding policy relating to reporting concerns about a child and managing a staff allegation 22/05/2024 ensure staff organise the indoor space and equipment to meet the needs of the children and to engage them in high quality play 08/06/2024 monitor staff practice and the quality of the provision to promote the interests of children.
