What is it like to attend this early years setting?

This provision meets requirements Children enter the club happily. They are very quick to settle and engage in play. Those who are new to the club meet the friendly staff and feel safe and secure.

Children have a key person when starting the club. This is an effective system and allows familiar staff to work with younger children. Children are happy seeing someone they recognise, and the key person equally knows them very well.

Children have flexibility in the days they attend and make choices about what they want to play with. All children are offered a range of healthy snacks and practise hygiene routines regularly. They enjoy helping with tasks and rout...ines at the club.

For example, they help to collect the plates and cups after snack. However, the provider acknowledges there is scope to provide children with more opportunities to be independent, such as self-serving at snack and teatime to further promote their independence skills. Children show good manners and are polite and respectful to each other.

Children of all ages behave well and are confident to approach visitors to the club. Older children are good role models for the younger ones, and there is a real sense of belonging in the club. Children enjoy playing competitive games and feel that they can trust the staff or ask them for help.

They always have the choice to play outside or in the large hall and access a range of sports equipment. For example, on the day of inspection, children balanced on the trim trail, played football on the playground and learnt to negotiate large hoops by twirling them on their arms and hips.

What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?

Staff have a good understanding of out-of-school care.

They ensure that children can relax and socialise with their friends. They balance this well with opportunities for children to engage in stimulating activities that support their formal learning. The club provides a different environment in contrast to children's day at school.

Children form strong friendships and enjoy one another's company as they take part in activities, such as games, crafts and sports. This helps them to build on their social, physical and creative skills. Staff engage with children enthusiastically during meaningful conversations, listening to children's views and opinions.

For example, staff join in with children's pretend play as they mould dough into pretend ice creams, chatting about their favourite flavours. The provider is very committed to providing a high-quality service. She creates a happy and professional work environment, where staff feel appreciated and valued.

The provider recognises that children's behavioural expectations required further development following the COVID-19 pandemic. Staff all attended behaviour training and this has had a positive impact on the club, where staff are excellent role models and children behave very well.Children are confident communicators.

They behave well and feel safe and secure at the after-school club. Any minor tussles are quickly resolved and staff run through the rules of the club each day, finishing with the most important rule: 'to have fun!' Staff support children to follow good hygiene practices, such as washing their hands prior to meals and snacks. Children understand the routines and remember to tell a member of staff when they are going to go to the toilet to support their safety and security.

Partnerships with parents are strong and parents speak highly of the provision. Parents leave glowing testimonials commenting on the children's delight at attending the club, together with the 'warm and friendly staff'.The provider wants the club to be successful.

Staff undertake training and use their experiences to support each other in a small team. Staff tell the inspector they feel very well supported and their well-being is checked on at regular intervals.Partnership working with the host school is strong.

This helps staff to have a better understanding of the needs of the children who attend. Staff exchange information and relay messages from teachers and parents to help with communication and consistency. Some staff work at the host school during the day.

This helps to ensure a smooth transition from the school to the club.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The provider and manager ensure that staff have a good understanding of the setting's safeguarding policy and keep their training up to date.

Staff recognise signs and symptoms that would cause them to be concerned for a child's welfare. They know how to identify children that may be exposed to extreme views. Staff know how to report any concerns they may have about any children or the adults they encounter.

Robust recruitment procedures are in place to ensure that all staff are suitable to work with children. Staff use risk assessments to help minimise potential hazards and maintain a safe environment. They are vigilant about safety and maintain correct ratios to keep children safe.
