What is it like to attend this early years setting?

This provision meets requirements Children look forward to attending the club after their school day, so that they can catch up with their friends.

They enjoy taking part in a wide range of activities in the spacious and safe indoor and outdoor environments. Children engage in activities and, overall, staff support their play well. Children enjoy having a say in the activities that are planned.

For example, they add ideas to their 'children's voices book'. Staff build on children's confidence and well-being. For instance, they provide younger children with diaries so that they can record their time at the club when they first start.

This supports ...children to settle and feel secure. Children say that they enjoy attending the club. They talk confidently about their favourite activities.

Staff nurture children's physical well-being. Children laugh as they play energetic ball games with each other and staff. They support and respect each other during team games.

Children are happy and behave well. Older children gain satisfaction from their activities. This is demonstrated when they proudly show what they have made to each other during arts and crafts sessions.

Staff have high expectations and are positive role models for the children. They show respect as they speak and listen to children and each other. Children display good manners.

They enjoy eating healthy snacks and learning about making healthy choices.

What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?

Children respond well to staff's expectations of how to conduct themselves while at the club. They are keen to share the club rules with staff and their peers during group time.

Children are kind and caring towards each other and respect each other's opinions. Staff are consistently calm and gentle with children.Staff engage with children well joining in activities and playing games with them.

Children are respectful and supportive to each other while waiting for their turn during a group game. Due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, children remain in their key stage bubbles. Younger children settle quickly and engage in the activities available to them.

They eagerly make books about their day and craft frog puppets.Staff build effective relationships with children. They give children verbal reassurance, smiles and praise, and play alongside them as they try new activities.

This helps children to form secure emotional attachments and promotes their sense of security and belonging within the club. For instance, as staff join children playing chess, children ask staff to be shown how to play.Children enjoy the physical activities that the staff offer.

Older children enjoy playing a game of football. They count how many goals they have scored and praise each other when they win the game. Younger children support each other during a game of musical statues and are happy to take on the role of the 'judge' during the game.

Staff provide parents with information about what their children have been doing during the session. Parents praise the staff and say that their children are happy and settled. All children are actively encouraged to join in the activities and games that staff provide.

The managers create an environment that promotes children's play and enjoyment and encourages them to build on the skills they learn at school. For example, children develop their independence, communication skills, physical abilities, friendships and their respect for others. The managers seek the views of parents, children and staff.

This, along with strong partnerships with the on-site schoolteachers, helps them to identify effective improvements that benefit the children attending the club.Staff are well supported by the club managers, and the managers by the provider. They receive regular supervision sessions and access to training which enables them to carry out their roles and responsibilities well.

Overall, staff use the information that is made available to them about the ages and needs of the children who attend, to plan activities to meet children's interests and needs. However, older children are not consistently engaged and, on occasions, seem bored with the indoor activities provided for them.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

All staff have completed training on how to protect children from abuse or neglect. Additionally, the managers have completed further training on less familiar areas of abuse. As a result, staff have a good knowledge of the signs of abuse and a strong awareness of their responsibilities to protect children from harm.

There are effective recruitment and induction procedures in place to ensure staff's suitability to work with children. Risk assessments are effective. For example, staff make regular headcounts and use walkie-talkies to ensure that when children move from one area to another, they can account for everyone present.
