They have plenty of opportunities to make independent choices about the activities that they would like to join in with. Children spend time building different structures with bricks and reading a selection of story books. They engage well and show high levels of concentration.
Children and staff engage well together. For example, they enjoy spending time playing card games. Staff support children to develop their understanding by spending time explaining the rules of games to younger children.
Both younger and older children enjoy playing these games tog...ether. Staff have high expectations for children's behaviour. The club has rules in place and staff will remind children of these.
The club supports methods used by the school. For example, staff will say 'hands on top' when they would like to gain children's attention. Children respond well to this by saying 'that means stop' as they stop and listen.
The club is a calming environment for children.
What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?
Children have opportunities to learn about healthy foods. They independently make their own snacks.
For example, they put their chosen filling into their rolls. They choose from a selection of healthy foods, such as banana and cucumber. Staff encourage children to try different foods, such as hummus and sour cream.
Children self-select their resources and make choices for themselves. Staff provide children with opportunities to unwind and relax as well as opportunities to take part in physical activities.Staff ensure that children have plenty of opportunities to engage in physical activities.
They enjoy playing games, such as pretending the floor is lava and spending time on the climbing frame. However, younger children may benefit from smaller group activities, to support them to gain confidence.Staff ensure that the club is safe and secure for children.
They have access to a large room which they operate from. Children are also able to use the hall and outdoor space. Staff complete daily safety checks of the premises to ensure that spaces used are safe and well maintained.
Leaders at the club are reflective. They evaluate the club and adapt practices to ensure that the club develops and improves. Leaders complete regular staff supervision meetings.
Staff have plenty of opportunities to enhance their continuous professional development. Staff attend training sessions that is personalised to help develop specific practice areas.Staff engage well with all children.
They notice when children are not participating in an activity and will respond to them individually, giving suggestions and ideas. Staff know the children well and support them to develop their interests. For example, they encourage children who enjoy building with bricks to make different structures, using their imaginations as well as copying designs.
Parents express that they are happy with the club and that children enjoy attending.Children are polite and helpful and they have good manners. For example, they say, please and thank you.
Children hold doors open for each other and chat nicely throughout their time at the club. They behave well and this is supported and reinforced by staff.
Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
Staff complete daily safety checks to ensure that areas used with children are safe and secure. Leaders and staff understand their role within child protection. They confidently identify the correct procedure that they would follow if they had concerns regarding a child's safety.
Staff understand the process they would follow if an allegation was made against a member of staff. Vetting and recruitment processes are effectively completed to ensure that staff are suitable to work with children. All staff hold paediatric first-aid certificates.
