What is it like to attend this early years setting?
This provision meets requirements Children and parents love and appreciate this well-organised holiday sports club, where the emphasis is placed on having fun.
Children arrive eager to start their day. They are welcomed by the friendly and enthusiastic staff, who help them to settle quickly. Children are happy to approach staff for guidance or help, showing that they feel secure at the setting.
Children are all aware of simple club rules, and are reminded of these frequently by camp leaders. Children are settled, happy and feel safe because these clear boundaries for good behaviour are established early. Children have many possibilities for extending their... physical development at the club.
For example, young children learn to bounce on space hoppers, and persevere until they can manage it. Staff challenge them to see if they can bounce a little bit further each time. They cheer children on as they make their attempts.
Children behave well. They listen to staff, and are happy and confident to share their ideas for books that they would like to read. Children are familiar with the routines of the club, and staff members encourage them to be independent.
They move around the setting confidently, exploring their environment and selecting resources at will.
What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?
Children form pairs to practise their hockey skills. They delight in imaginary play, pretending that the hockey ball is a pirate ship which they are guiding with their hockey sticks.
They take turns to reach a treasure island with their ships. Staff join in, extending the game by making the children believe that they are being pursued by pirates. Children become absorbed in their imaginary world, supported skilfully by staff.
Staff interactions with children are of a high quality. Children happily laugh and chat with staff about their families and their holidays. The approach staff with confidence, asking questions, or when they wish to have their needs met.
Children socialise well with both their peers and staff, and often show signs of affection to staff members, such as holding hands with them. This demonstrates the close and secure bonds that children develop with members of staff. The camp has a strong ethos of enjoyment within safe parameters.
Staff are enthusiastic, cheerful and have a positive attitude with the children. They understand their roles and responsibilities very well, and feel they are exceptionally well supported by the management team. Staff undergo comprehensive induction training when they join, and their performances are regularly monitored and assessed, to maintain the highest standards.
This ensures that children always benefit from consistently good practice. Staff take pride in their work. They express their belief that children deserve to have fun at camp, and that 'each and every child should go home feeling happier than when they arrived.'
Children enjoy an exceptionally varied and busy schedule of activities at the sports club. This programme is balanced with regular opportunities for quiet periods, where children can choose independently from activities, such as imaginary play or stories. Staff pay attention to children's views, and set out activities that children have expressed an interest in, such as crafts and drawing.
Children show a high level of focus and engagement. For instance, after playing hockey, the children become absorbed rolling a ball back and forth to each other in pairs. They are offered many opportunities to move around and be active in the fresh air.
They enhance their physical development, playing in the extensive and well-equipped school grounds.Parents are happy with the service provided by the club, and say children are enthusiastic about attending every morning. Parents rate staff very highly, and describe them as warm, friendly and professional.
As a result, children settle well, enjoy the activities and make friends, even if they attend a different school. Parents report that their children talk excitedly about games they have played when they get home in the evening. They also pass on their satisfaction with security arrangements at the club.
Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.Staff know that it is their responsibility to keep children safe and to support their welfare. They know about signs of abuse, and understand the club's safeguarding policy for recording and reporting concerns.
Children are safe because staff efficiently supervise them, and work in partnership with the school to provide risk assessments. For example, the premises are secure and checks are made on equipment and resources for safety. The club has robust procedures for the recruitment of staff to ensure that they are suitable to work with children, and that existing staff remain suitable.
