What is it like to attend this early years setting?
This provision meets requirements Children thoroughly enjoy coming to this friendly and welcoming camp. Staff get to know the children well, listen to their news, find out about their interests and needs and meet these well.
Children contribute their ideas for activities and staff show respect for them. They organise what the children want to do, and children have fun as they play together and with the staff. Children show they are settled and at ease in this busy, but calm, environment.
Staff organise the environment effectively so that children can choose from a wide range of activities that interest them. Children play together cooperatively as they mak...e 'bubble gum' and 'birthday cakes' with special sand and other materials. Other children choose various materials to make their creations, such as a tickle stick or a paper boat.
Staff are on hand to help the children think about how they can join the pieces together and then encourage the children to test their boats in the water to see if they will float. When children find out their boats sink, they realise it is because the paper soaks up the water. Children think about what materials they could use to make the boat from so that it will float.
They decide that 'curved plastic' should work and then test this out. Staff are skilful in helping children test their ideas and solve problems for themselves.
What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?
Staff receive a comprehensive induction, and this helps them know their roles and responsibilities to keep children safe and to help them have fun at the camp.
The management team regularly shares new ideas from other camps with staff, such as games and activities, to maintain the children's interests and engagement.Children's behaviour is good. Staff encourage them to listen to their friends and to be respectful.
They sensitively talk to them about the consequences of their actions, when reminding them not to talk over their friends, for example. Staff remind children of the rules of the camp and children remember the fire evacuation procedure and confidently tell the group what to do. This helps them develop an awareness of how to stay safe and be confident in a group situation.
Children thoroughly enjoy joining in when a staff member 'raps' the story of 'The Gruffalo'. Staff are enthusiastic, using different tones of voices and clap and dance around, capturing the children's interests. Children then jiggle their bodies, clap their hands, and join in with parts of the story, while smiling and laughing.
They later get up and tip toe outside, to see if they can find the 'Gruffalo'. Children say that it was 'really funny' and that they enjoyed it.The committed and consistent senior management team are highly focused on coaching staff to ensure their practice has a positive impact on the children attending.
They observe staff and give positive feedback on their interactions with the children and give ideas for areas of development. Staff say they are well supported in the camp and are grateful for any training and coaching they receive.Staff make the most of these opportunities to broaden children's vocabulary as they play and explore.
Children visit the 'fairy garden' to find stones to make their snails from the story they had listened to earlier. For example, when children find a 'big' stone, staff find out what other words the children can use instead. Children come up with their ideas, including 'huge, gigantic' and 'humungous'.
Children have lots of opportunities for regular fresh and air and exercise. They play team games, such as football and dodge ball, and have sessions on the bouncy castle. Staff take them swimming several times a week.
This supports children's physical development and enjoyment of being active.
