What is it like to attend this early years setting?
The provision requires improvement On the day of the inspection, several safety issues were identified on the premises.
The nursery shares a number of facilities with other users of the building and this provides challenges for the nursery staff. However, the provider acted swiftly, and steps were taken to eliminate these risks and ensure children's safety.Staff do not always have a clear learning intent for some of the activities they provide for children.
This means, at times, children do not always gain the most from activities and play opportunities are not organised to ensure that all children have the best learning experience. The quality of teaching... is variable, and not all staff are confident in extending children's learning so that they make the best possible progress. Consequently, not all the children engage fully in the curriculum on offer, and for some children this negatively impacts on their behaviour.
That said, children are generally happy, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND); they settle quickly and form positive relationships with staff.The provider and staff work closely with external professionals to implement targeted interventions. This support benefits children with SEND.
The special educational needs coordinator overseeing children with SEND monitors their progress. She makes referrals for additional support and advice and keeps parents informed about their child.
What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?
The curriculum overall is not planned well enough.
Staff do not give sufficient consideration when planning activities to challenge, extend and engage children in their learning. Consequently, although children initially enjoy what they are doing, they quickly lose interest and concentration and move away to seek other toys and activities.Overall, children are eager to join in activities.
However, some children lose concentration during circle time and are reluctant to join in. Some staff do not have the skills to help children listen to and understand the expectations of behaviour during these times. As a result, children in the group become unsettled and distracted, which impacts on their learning.
The provider works alongside staff to provide an appropriate curriculum. However, staff's practice is not consistently evaluated to ensure that teaching and interactions are always of a high standard. During regular supervision meetings with staff, the provider has not identified areas that require strengthening to support good practice.
However, the provider does discuss staff's well-being and how to support their workload, which staff appreciate.Staff know of the importance of supporting communication and language. This includes supporting children who speak English as an additional language.
On occasion, staff miss opportunities to extend children's thinking and vocabulary skills by not asking open questions to challenge their thoughts and to encourage them to share ideas. Staff do not allow sufficient time for children to think and respond.All children enjoy daily outdoor play.
There are lots of opportunities for them to be physically active. Children delight in using the apparatus available to them. Staff closely supervise to ensure that children remain safe when taking appropriate risks.
As a result, children are building their large muscles and gaining in confidence.Children are familiar with the routines of the day. However, at times, routines interrupt children's engagement in play.
This reduces the time that children can immerse themselves fully in learning opportunities.Staff ensure an inclusive setting. They provide good support for children to gain a positive awareness of people's differences.
They value diverse ways of speaking and ensure children who speak English as an additional language have good opportunities to use their home language.Parents give positive feedback about the nursery. They say children talk fondly at home about the staff.
Parents report that communication from staff is good. They receive regular updates about children's ongoing progress.
Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
There is an open and positive culture around safeguarding that puts children's interests first.
What does the setting need to do to improve?
