What is it like to attend this early years setting?

This provision meets requirements Children are very confident and happy in this welcoming and nurturing environment.

In the mornings, children enjoy a relaxing start to the day. They are offered breakfast and take part in activities of their own choosing. In the afternoons, children enter ready to have fun after a busy day in school.

There is plenty of laughter as children engage in the experiences and build relationships with staff and peers. There is a real focus on equality at the club. All children are valued and respected and staff take time to talk with the children and support their well-being.

In addition, the 'Children's Council' meet reg...ularly to share opinions and make decisions about what they want to do at club. Children help to create tournaments and celebrate one another's achievements. The star of the week gets a 'V.

I.P' pass with special privileges. Children also collect points for their house and receive rewards at celebrations throughout the year.

The club is situated in a large school with a hall, classrooms and large outdoor spaces to use. They cater for around half of the children who attend the school with many children choosing to stay for club when parents do not need the childcare. It is a busy club and children are confident and independent.

Activities are set out each session and children collect a coloured lanyard or sash which corresponds with their chosen activity. Children know that the numbers of children in each activity are restricted to keep them safe. If there are no lanyards or sashes left, they choose another activity and come back when there is space.

What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?

Children understand the club rules in place to support their good health. For example, when stricter restrictions were in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, children stayed in year groups to help reduce the risk of infection.Children enjoy a light tea when they arrive after school.

They choose from a range of fillings for their sandwich or wrap and fresh salad and fruit accompaniments are always available. They also have plenty of water and can fill their own bottles or use one of the club's cups to drink from.Children enjoy plenty of opportunities outside.

They benefit from fresh air and exercise as they play games, have a go at skipping or select resources to take outside. Inside, children take part in creative experiences. They make cards and gifts to give to important people in their lives and paint or draw pictures to take home.

Staff are good role models and adopt a similar approach to behaviour management that is in place at school. Children receive plenty of praise and encouragement and are pleased to show their achievements. They behave well and show that they feel safe and secure at club.

Children use good manners and are polite and confident when speaking to staff and visitors.Children interact well with staff, chatting to them about their day at school and inviting them to join in with activities. Staff know the children and their families well.

They focus on supporting children's well-being and provide plenty of opportunities for children to share their views and feelings.Children are caring and considerate of one another. Younger children follow the guidance from older children, who are happy to look after the younger ones.

They play well together and enjoy varied activities with friends across the different year groups.The manager, deputy and staff work closely with the staff in the host school. They exchange relevant information about the children and ensure that parents are kept up to date with any changes or news.

There is also good communication regarding any vulnerable children and families, and this helps to ensure that consistent support and help is available when needed.The manager, deputy and staff have a clear vision for their club. They work very well together, value one another and adopt a culture of mutual respect.

Effective supervision arrangements ensure that all staff understand their roles and responsibilities.Staff have plenty of opportunities for training and to conduct their own research to enhance their skills and support their professional development. They also access training events with the host school.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.The club is a safe and secure environment for children.

Robust recruitment and vetting procedures are in place to ensure the staff are suitable to work at club. Risk assessments are effective, and staff are vigilant to ensure any potential risks to children are minimised. Accidents and injuries are managed well by staff who are qualified in first aid.

The manager, deputy and staff keep their knowledge of child protection up to date. They understand their responsibilities to assure children's safety and to record and report any concerns about a child's welfare or a colleague's conduct. There is always at least one designated staff lead to deal with any concerns, and they communicate with the host school as appropriate.
