Summary of key findings for parents and pupils

This is a good school The headteacher is a passionate and visionary leader who has moved the school forward significantly since its previous inspection.

Very well-defined values underpin the school's work. These have a powerful impact on the way that staff, pupils and governors go about their day-to-day work. They all develop and sustain excellent relationships with others.

Pupils' thrive in a climate of care where they feel safe and are valued as individuals. They are challenged and supported in equal measure to be the best they can. Hence, pupils' personal development and behaviour are excellent.

Most pupils, including the most able, make good progr...ess across a wide range of subjects. They make particularly strong progress in writing and in their speed and skill in handling numbers in mathematics. Pupils are taught effectively to read, and younger ones rapidly develop skills in using phonics when learning to read.

The school is focusing well on helping pupils to analyse and question the texts they read. However, leaders know such skills are not fully embedded and more pupils need to understand what they are reading in greater depth. Teaching is good and enables pupils to make good progress in their learning.

Teaching staff have consistently high expectations of pupils' work and of what they can achieve. Pupils are challenged well by the work they are given, especially in mathematics. However, staff are not yet systematic enough in teaching pupils how to explain mathematical ideas.

This sometimes slows learning, especially for a few of the most able girls The provision for pupils who have special educational needs and/or disabilities is highly effective in meeting their needs. Children in the early years get a good start to their education. They enjoy the rich range of practical activities, often becoming totally absorbed in exploring a problem or new idea.

The curriculum provides strong opportunities for pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Its focus on developing the 'whole child' results in well-rounded youngsters who are confident, self-assured, thoughtful and very well prepared for future life. Governors provide good oversight of the school's work and ask searching questions to ensure that its performance is good enough.

Information about this school
