Summary of key findings for parents and pupils

This is a school that requires improvement Leaders and governors have not been fully effective in ensuring that good-quality teaching is consistently provided for pupils in key stages 1 and 2. Teachers' expectations of pupils is sometimes too low. Pupils are not making enough progress to catch up from their low starting points.

Too few pupils achieve the standards of which they are capable. They have a limited understanding of science and some foundation subjects. The monitoring and evaluation of the school's work are not sharp enough for leaders and governors to make accurate judgements about the impact of school initiatives.

The teaching of mathematics is no...t secure. Work is not always well pitched so that pupils extend the skills they need to learn and deepen their understanding of the subject. Too few pupils reach the higher standards of attainment.

While pupils say they enjoy reading, they have not been taught a good vocabulary to help them become fluent and confident readers. Books are not always well matched to pupils' reading ability. Too many pupils are persistently absent and arrive late to school, and this impacts on the quality of their learning.

A small minority of pupils do not consistently follow the school's expectations for good behaviour. The school has the following strengths This is an inclusive and caring school. There are good procedures to ensure the safety and well-being of pupils.

Pupils feel safe in school. There is some strong teaching in all parts of the school. The provision for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) is good and so this group of pupils make good progress.

The school successfully places a strong emphasis on tolerance and respect for each other, which effectively develops pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural awareness. Children in the early years are confident in school. A focus on developing children's literacy and mathematical skills means they are well prepared for Year 1.

West Melton Junior and Infant School is smaller than the average-sized primary school. Children in the early years attend part time in Nursery and full time in Reception. Governors have appointed a temporary deputy headteacher, who took up post at the start of this term.

Nearly all pupils are from White British backgrounds and very few speak English as an additional language. The proportion of pupils supported through the pupil premium is well above average and is in the top 20% of schools. The proportion of pupils with SEND, including those with an education, health and care plan, is well above average.
