This is a good school Lynton Church of England Primary School is a caring and nurturing place to learn.

Pupils are challenged to achieve well and are now making good progress regardless of ability, background or starting point. Better teaching is successfully improving pupils' achievement. The headteacher and middle leaders have driven improvement with determination and an expectation that only the best is good enough.

They accurately know the school's strengths and areas to develop. The governing body is highly committed and challenges leaders to fulfil their ambition to deliver the best education for its pupils. Governors clearly know the strengths and weakn...esses of the school.

The school's community values are strongly developed throughout all aspects of school life. Pupils enjoy being part of the school community and are supportive of each other. For example, the older ones make sure that the new Reception children are quickly made to feel welcome.

The behaviour of the pupils is outstanding. Pupils have developed resilience and enjoy applying what they are learning to new and challenging situations. They like to answer questions, often using well-considered reasoning to support their answers.

The quality of teaching continues to improve. Good use is made of shared training and coaching with staff from the two other schools in the federation. Consequently, pupils' reading and writing are strong and the teaching of mathematics is improving.

Feedback to pupils effectively tells them how successful their learning is and what to improve. They are less sure of how good their progress is. Early years teaching and learning are good.

Children are given a good start in the school because learning is planned well. Children make good progress overall. However, the development of writing has accurately been highlighted as an area to develop further.

Lynton Primary School is much smaller than the average-sized primary school and it serves the communities of Lynton and Lynmouth. The school is part of the West Exmoor Federation which consists of three village schools.

These are governed by a single governing body and led by an executive headteacher. There are more girls than boys in the school and the proportion of pupils supported by the pupil premium grant is broadly in line with that nationally. The proportion of pupils who have special educational need and/or disabilities is much lower than the national average.
