Summary of key findings for parents and pupils

This is a good school Since the last inspection, effective leadership has led to improvements in the quality of education provided. Teaching is now good and, as a result, pupils make good progress in both key stages.

The headteacher, ably supported by the governors and leadership team, truly believes that every pupil can succeed. As a result of these high expectations, pupils do well in reading, writing and mathematics and in a range of subjects across the curriculum. Teaching, learning and assessment are effective.

Teachers plan learning carefully so that it builds well on what pupils already know and can do. Work set generally challenges pupils of varying ab...ilities, including the most able, with the exception of reasoning in mathematics. The achievement of disadvantaged pupils has improved.

These pupils are now doing well. Differences in achievement between disadvantaged pupils and others nationally are diminishing, particularly in writing and mathematics. Due to good teaching and effective leadership, children in the Reception classes get off to a good start.

However, middle-attaining boys and those who need to catch up with others in the Reception classes and in Year 1 are not given enough opportunities to learn how to form their letters and numbers correctly. The headteacher has set a clear educational direction. It is supported by effective self-evaluation and rigorous performance management of all staff.

A strong culture of safeguarding permeates all aspects of school life. Pupils feel safe, behave well and have positive attitudes to learning. Governors have an accurate view of the school's strengths and areas for development and work effectively with leaders.

Pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is catered for effectively. Extra-curricular activities and sports events enrich pupils' learning and personal development. Although attendance has improved since the last inspection, a very small minority of pupils who have special educational needs and/or disabilities have too many days off school.

Parents are very positive about the school. They value the high levels of care and individualised support that pupils receive.
