Summary of key findings for parents and pupils

This is a good school The headteacher leads the school with integrity.

He is determined that staff do all they can to meet the needs of all pupils. The headteacher is bringing about brisk improvements to the quality of teaching. This is resulting in, for example, pupils making much better progress in their mathematics.

Teaching is good. Staff deliver exciting and interesting lessons that make pupils pay attention and work hard. Phonics is taught consistently well.

Pupils read fluently, with understanding and pleasure. Children get off to a secure start in the early years. Kind and skilled staff provide exciting activities and tasks that make children ...want to come to school to learn.

The curriculum helps pupils to know and remember more. Staff plan work in sequences which build on the things pupils have learned previously. Staff feel extremely proud to work at the school.

They work closely together in shared ways and feel that leaders are mindful of their workload. Relationships are trusting, positive and respectful. Pupils are happy-natured and are very considerate of each other and of adults.

Staff and pupils describe Scarcliffe Primary School as 'one big family'. There is a culture of vigilant safeguarding, and staff take swift and appropriate action to help protect pupils. Parents and carers are very positive about all aspects of the school.

All those who responded to Parent View would recommend it to others. Attendance is consistently above the national average. Pupils achieve well across different year groups.

They make good progress and are well prepared for secondary school by the end of Year 6. Although leaders are training teachers to improve their teaching of spelling, grammar and punctuation, leaders cannot be sure that it will have the sustained impact they intend. Teachers do not plan sufficient opportunities for pupils to write extended pieces of writing.
