Summary of key findings for parents and pupils

This is a good school St Wilfrid's is a good and improving school. Parents and carers are happy about the quality of education that the school provides. The strongly nurturing ethos enables pupils to feel safe, develop personal skills quickly and really enjoy the activities provided for them.

Pupils have plenty of opportunity to learn about topics in many other subjects apart from reading, writing and mathematics. The stimulating displays around school bear testimony to the quality of pupils' experiences and acquisition of skills in art and design. The school provides pupils with many activities and visits which widen their knowledge and understanding about living in m...odern Britain.

Pupils of all ages achieve well because teaching is good and better than it was at the time of the previous inspection. The accurate assessment of pupils' work quickly identifies those who are not meeting their targets and those who need further assistance. There is still scope for teachers to provide greater challenge for the most able pupils.

Pupils sometimes do not complete their work. Occasionally, teachers do not notice that some pupils are struggling with their work in class. Pupils who have special educational needs (SEN) and/or disabilities generally progress well.

There is, however, a small group of these pupils who are making only slow progress. The school makes effective provision for pupils who arrive from countries outside the United Kingdom. Pupils conduct themselves well in class and around school.

Their attendance is improving. Children in the well-led and managed early years setting progress well because teaching is good. They enjoy school and cooperate well with the adults who work with them.

Effective leadership from the headteacher, subject coordinators and governors ensures that teaching and achievement continue to improve.
