About Sunningwell Church of England Primary School
This is a good school Leaders, including governors, have worked hard to ensure that pupils receive a good education. Leaders' high expectations for the social, emotional and academic success of pupils is shared by staff and governors.
The school provides a broad, balanced and creative curriculum. Pupils thrive in many areas of the curriculum, such as drama, music and physical education (PE). Pupils develop strong skills, knowledge and an understanding of how writers use language to shape themes, characters and settings.
Consequently, pupils make good progress in reading. Pupils' mathematical skills develop well across the school. Well-planned sequences of less...ons ensure that pupils build on their prior understanding and knowledge.
Teachers successfully embed grammar in the teaching of writing. Teachers make explicit the link between reading and writing through the use of high-quality texts. The relationships between staff and pupils are strong.
Pupils feel well cared for and know how to keep safe both in school and beyond. Pupils' behaviour throughout the school is strong. Pupils demonstrate high levels of empathy, kindness and respect for each other, staff and visitors.
Leadership of early years is particularly strong. Children thrive in the well-structured learning environment. Disadvantaged pupils receive bespoke support to ensure that they make strong progress and attain well across the curriculum.
Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) receive individualised support that ensures their academic, social and emotional development. The curriculum supports pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development well. For example, pupils have a breadth of opportunities to develop their understanding of democracy, tolerance and free speech.
The most able pupils do not make rapid progress in writing and mathematics in key stage 1. Some pupils in Year 1 are not secure in their understanding of the link between letters and the sounds they represent.
