Summary of key findings for parents and pupils

This is a good school The school has significantly changed since the last inspection. Leaders and governors know the school well and have been proactive in ensuring that the school has been able to deal effectively with these changes.

The quality of teaching and learning is good. Where teaching is strongest, effective questioning and modelling enable pupils to be supported and challenged well. However, some variation exists within some year groups.

Some teachers do not always provide pupils with tasks that routinely challenge them sufficiently, particularly the most able. Consistently good phonics teaching enables most pupils to read and spell words well. Midd...le leaders are enthusiastic and demonstrate a strong commitment to the school.

They are proud to work at The Minster Nursery and Infant school. Pupils have very positive attitudes to learning and behave well around the school and in lessons. They are respectful to each other and adults.

As a result, no learning time is lost. Relationships between adults and pupils are positive. Pupils are proud of being part of the school.

They say they are happy and safe, and parents and carers agree. Safeguarding is effective. Leaders and staff are well trained and are vigilant to risks faced by pupils.

The most vulnerable families and pupils are well supported. Pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is promoted effectively. Pupils have a mature understanding of respecting differences and how to treat others.

The curriculum is broad and balanced. Leaders provide pupils with a range of opportunities to enhance learning across the curriculum. The additional funding for pupils who are disadvantaged and pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) is used effectively.

Consequently, they make strong progress from their starting points. Children entering the early years settle well due to strong transition procedures. Staff are caring, which enables children to feel safe.

Children in the early years make good progress from low starting points. However, not all adults consistently provide opportunities to develop children's language and communication skills through effective questioning and modelling of language.

Since the inspection of the school in May 2008, the school has changed significantly in the pupil demographic, leadership and governance.

The Minster Nursery and Infant School is larger than the average-sized primary school. Pupils come from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds, with the largest group being Black or Black British–African. The school is in the top 20% of all schools nationally for the proportion of pupils who speak English as an additional language.
