Summary of key findings for parents and pupils

This is a good school The new leadership team is successfully driving improvements after the recent instability in staffing and decline in outcomes. As a result, current pupils are making strong progress. Governors are determined to rapidly return to outstanding provision and outcomes.

They are proactive in seeking support and advice to improve their own practice to support them in checking leaders' work to bring about improvements. Strong recent support from the local authority and the East Riding School Improvement Partnership (ERSIP) has been fundamental in supporting leaders in steering improvements this year. Phonics teaching has improved and pupils apply their sk...ills well to reading and writing.

The implementation of systems to support the improvement of writing is resulting in the vast majority of pupils having a clear understanding of what they need to do next to improve, and consequently now making good progress. In mathematics, teacher direction and effective questioning support pupils well in applying their reasoning skills and developing their understanding. Pupils' attendance is consistently better than that of pupils nationally.

A positive culture of caring for each other and strong relationships between adults and pupils result in pupils feeling safe and good about their time in school. Pupils' behaviour and attitudes to learning are very good. Transition to school is a positive process and children in early years get a nurturing and safe welcome to school life.

Assessment systems in early years are not detailed or focused enough to ensure that each child is making the progress they should across all aspects of the curriculum. Areas of learning in the classroom do not always support or direct all children in making the best progress that they can from their starting points. While pupils have access to all aspects of the curriculum, coverage and progress in subjects other than reading, writing and mathematics are more variable.

Provision for pupils who have special educational needs and/or disabilities has improved, though planning and checking of progress from pupils' starting points are not yet consistent across all classes. Middle leaders with responsibility for curriculum subjects are in place. However, some have not had time to have sufficient impact on outcomes in their subject area.

The proportion of pupils who are eligible for support through the pupil premium funding is below average. The proportion of pupils from ethnic minority groups is below the national average. The school meets requirements on the publication of specified information on its website.
