Summary of key findings for parents and pupils

This is a good school The headteacher and senior leaders have brought about significant improvement since the last inspection.

They have set high standards for pupils. achievement and improved the quality of teaching and learning. Governors know the school well, have a clear understanding of its priorities and provide an effective balance of challenge and support.

They hold leaders rigorously to account for the progress of pupils. Leaders and governors evaluate the school accurately and have put in place effective plans to secure improvement. These have had a strong impact in moving the school forward.

In 2018, the proportions of pupils achieving the ...expected standards at the end of key stages 1 and 2 in reading, writing and mathematics improved significantly. The early years is very well led and teaching is outstanding. The proportion of children achieving a good level of development at the end of Reception Year has continued to rise.

Leaders and staff place the well-being of pupils at the centre of the school.s values and aims. They are rigorous in ensuring that all pupils, particularly those at risk of harm, are kept safe.

St Wilfrid.s provides a warm, friendly and nurturing environment in which pupils thrive. Teachers know their pupils and assess them skilfully to provide engaging work that moves learning on.

As a result, pupils are motivated and make good progress. In the occasional lessons where teaching is less effective, tasks do not provide enough challenge, so learning is superficial. The personal development, behaviour and welfare of pupils are outstanding.

Pupils behave exceptionally well and show respect for one another and for visitors. The school.s approach to managing behaviour helps pupils to make the right choices.

They feel safe and enjoy the school.s family atmosphere. Parents and carers say that their children are part of a lovely community that provides warmth and support.

Leaders recognise that not enough pupils are working at the higher standards in reading, writing and mathematics. They have plans in place to increase the challenge for the most able. The curriculum is broad and balanced, but pupils do not make as much progress in the wider curriculum as they do in English and mathematics.

s is a voluntary-aided Catholic primary school. Its last inspection under section 48 of the Education Act 2005 was in March 2016. The number of pupils attending the school has increased since the previous inspection.

Pupils are now taught in seven single-year-group classes. External reviews of governance arrangements and the use of pupil premium funding have taken place since the previous inspection. The school works closely with other local schools and also Catholic schools in the Worthing Deanery.
